The Foundation is pleased to announce it recently awarded 113 grants totaling $43.9 million in its five grantmaking programs, supporting efforts to expand access to resources and opportunities that promote a more vital and just city and region for all.

Arts and Culture

Expanding access to diverse, inclusive, and high-quality arts and culture experiences.

We awarded 14 grants totaling $4.7 million to arts and culture organizations playing a meaningful cultural and civic role in their communities. The three-year general operating grants help organizations to continue strengthening their commitment to equity, inclusion, and access and contributing to our region’s vibrancy.

 

We awarded 14 grants totaling $3.4 million to advance Arts Education School Partnership Programs. The grants below are for partnership programs designed to provide over 13,100 students with hands-on arts education at 75+ Philadelphia schools.

  • Acting Without Boundaries to conduct theater arts residency classes for students with physical disabilities. ($278,163 over 36 months)

  • ArtistYear to engage resident teaching artists to serve full-time in Philadelphia public schools to expand student access to arts education. ($480,000 over 36 months)

  • Center for Architecture to sustain and advance design education in Philadelphia schools. ($499,875 over 36 months)

  • Fabric Workshop and Museum to support its onsite studio program, as well as its high school apprentice training program. ($128,220 over 24 months)

  • Food Beatz (fiscally sponsored by Headlong Dance Theater) to support its bucket drumming residency program. ($59,143 over 24 months)

  • Main Line Art Center to host residencies at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and Overbrook School for the Blind as well as collaborative workshops between the schools for students to design thematic public artworks. ($44,563 over 12 months)

  • Mamadêlê Foundation for its Afro-Brazilian Arts Residency Programs provided at several public schools in Northeast Philadelphia. ($56,150 over 12 months)

  • Mann Center for the Performing Arts to support its Music Industry Training Program for Philadelphia high school students. ($493,845 over 34 months)

  • Philadelphia Film Society for its PFS Residencies that support youth with hands-on filmmaking experiences. ($148,694 over 24 months)

  • Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center Inc. to connect West Philadelphia youth to impactful instrumental music instruction and education through its “School Ensemble Program.” ($588,000 over 36 months)

  • Philadelphia Youth Choral Ensembles to support “Find Your Instrument” weekly after-school choral lessons for youth in Philadelphia. ($57,000 over 24 months)

  • Photography Without Borders to provide after-school photo and video classes where students use cameras to share their stories through exhibits, videos, and published pieces. ($81,250 over 12 months)

  • Theatre Exile Company to host Paper Wings, a theater residency program aimed at uplifting and supporting young artists. ($184,500 over 36 months)

  • Young Audiences of Eastern Pennsylvania Inc. to deliver arts residencies in visual art, dance, or theatre to Philadelphia students. ($325,950 over 36 months)

 

We awarded three grants totaling $579,502 to advance Arts Education Teaching Artist Training Programs. The grants below are expected to reach 575 teaching artists with professional development and networking support to improve their practice and connect them to colleagues and additional resources.

 

We awarded one additional grant through the Arts and Culture program:

  • Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance to support research, public engagement, and the development of policy recommendations to strengthen the arts and culture sector. ($1,040,400 over 36 months)

 

Children and Families

Supporting the healthy development and academic success of young Philadelphians.

We awarded 17 grants totaling $8.13 million over three years to advance Caregiver Supports. Each year, the grants below are expected to provide caregiver supports and opportunities for early learning for 5,479 pregnant and parenting families with young children.

  • Beyond Literacy to enhance early education outcomes through family literacy and interactive learning activities. ($574,966 over 36 months)

  • Children's Crisis Treatment Center to expand its parent/caregiver services and programs at a recreation center located in North Philadelphia. ($293,060 over 36 months)

  • Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to expand Reach Out and Read within pediatric primary care offices. ($513,000 over 24 months)

  • Food Trust to support multi-generational cooking classes for young children and caregivers. ($452,915 over 36 months)

  • Gemma Services to expand the Family Support Program through Family Check Up Online and Parent Cafés. ($343,673 over 24 months)

  • Historic Fair Hill to support family engagement and caregiver support workshops. ($231,313 over 36 months)

  • HopePHL to support their Family Connections Program. ($632,500 over 24 months)

  • Jewish Family and Children's Service of Greater Philadelphia to support the Parental Empowerment Program that provides individualized parental education supports to families. ($601,710 over 36 months)

  • Literacy Partners to support parent engagement and literacy classes through its La Fuerza de Familias Latinas program. ($508,050 over 36 months)

  • Musicopia to support the Philadelphia Lullaby Project. ($563,245 over 36 months)

  • National Nurse-Led Care Consortium to expand access to services through the Parents as Teachers program. ($747,500 over 36 months)

  • Nationalities Service Center of Philadelphia to provide family literacy programming to immigrant families across the city. ($628,451 over 36 months)

  • Once Upon A Preemie to support the NICU Nest: Read To My Preemie Program. ($165,000 over 36 months)

  • Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association to support Parents as Teachers multi-lingual home visiting program for caregivers with children ages 0-5. ($835,449 over 36 months)

  • ParentChild+ to expand its family home visiting program for Philadelphia families. ($703,041 over 36 months)

  • Philadelphia City Fund to implement Parent Cafés across the city to strengthen family engagement. ($300,000 over 36 months)

  • Posibilidades Infinitas to support Creciendo Juntos: Early Autism Support Program. ($36,750 over 36 months)

 

We awarded 11 grants totaling $7.47 million over three years to advance our Prevent Homelessness objective. The grants below will provide critical, in-time supports including eviction and foreclosure prevention to help stabilize a family’s housing in the short-term and/or provide holistic supports that promote long-term stability. The proposed projects will help prevent homelessness for more than 4,400 families over the next three years including providing $2.5 million in direct housing stability assistance.

 

We awarded 13 grants totaling $6.05 million over three years to advance our Teacher Preparation objective. The grants below are expected to directly impact 470 new and current elementary teachers, 185 school leaders, and 90 high school students over the grant period.

  • Center for Black Educator Development to expand its Teaching Academy program to two Philadelphia schools. ($575,000 over 36 months)

  • Drexel University to support Partnerships for Success: Early Educator Certification Initiative (EECI). ($617,056 over 36 months)
  • Elevate 215 to support coordination and collaboration efforts to recruit, develop and retain a diverse certified teacher workforce. ($670,812 over 29 months)
  • Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to develop an certification program to support diverse educators on the path to Level 1 certification. ($658,731 over 36 months)
  • Joyful Readers to support the Tutor-to-Teacher development program. ($145,524 over 30 months)
  • National Center on Education and the Economy to support the statewide #PANeedsTeachers coalition to increase the number of certified teachers. ($417,250 over 26 months)
  • Pennsylvania State University to support the Teacher Education Mentoring Program  (T.E.M.P.) to support teacher retention. ($255,266 over 36 months)
  • Philadelphia Charters for Excellence to support Philadelphia's Public Charter School Consortium - Teacher and Leader Pathways Initiative. ($106,000 over 26 months)
  • Philadelphia City Fund to support a pipeline into teaching careers within the Octavius Catto Scholarship program at Community College of Philadelphia. ($754,578 over 36 months)
  • Philadelphia Hebrew Public Charter School to pilot a Certification Navigator program for increasing the number of certified teachers in Philadelphia. ($482,250 over 24 months)
  • Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School to support the Teacher Pipeline Initiative to increase the number of certified teachers in Philadelphia. ($506,500 over 24 months)
  • Teach Plus to recruit and train teachers of color as facilitators of and participants in the Philadelphia Affinity Group Network (PAGN). ($575,000 over 24 months)
  • Urban Teacher Center to support mobilizing, developing, and retaining diverse, fully-certified Philadelphia educators in early grades. ($287,500 over 24 months)

 

We awarded one additional grant to advance our Prevent Homelessness and our Public Benefits objectives:

  • National Nurse-Led Care Consortium to support the Family Advocacy and Integrated Resources (FAIR) fund supporting the basic needs of families receiving home visiting services. ($5,058,850 over 33 months)

 

Democracy and Civic Initiatives

Enabling more people to participate in democratic processes and finding collaborative ways for funders to accelerate improvement. 

We awarded 14 grants totaling $2.5 million over approximately 20 months to advance our Voter Participation objective. The grants below are expected to directly engage over 518,000 potential voters across the state and impact millions of additional voters through media and journalism.

 

We awarded one additional grant to advance our Census Participation objective.

 

Environment and Public Space

Protecting and improving natural areas and community spaces. 

We awarded seven grants totaling $2 million to advance our Community Greening Plans objective. These grants are expected to establish or advance nine community-driven plans to improve and expand green space, benefiting over 268,000 residents of ten Philadelphia neighborhoods.

 

We awarded 13 grants totaling more than $2.5 million to advance our Outdoor Programming objective. These grants are expected to impact more than 75,000 people in Philadelphia and Camden over the next three years.
