Additional philanthropic investment in Philadelphia can help make more lives better by connecting more people to more opportunities.

The Philadelphia region is home to more than 2,000 foundations. In 2021, these foundations collectively held assets of $29 billion, with grantmaking standing at $2 billion.  Despite these significant contributions, total charitable giving in Philadelphia lags behind smaller cities like Boston, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. Improving the local philanthropic sector’s ability to coordinate efforts and efficiently fund programs and initiatives together will help make the most of available resources.

In advancing this objective, we recognize that there are many ways that organizations and communities can contribute. Possible efforts include joint funding programs, shared research, evaluation, and learning opportunities, and centralized resources for nonprofit organizations.

We do not anticipate releasing RFPs for this objective. Instead, we encourage you to review the decision-making framework associated with this strategy. And, should you feel that your project aligns with those criteria, you are welcome to contact us with ideas that can accelerate regional funder coordination and collaboration.

This objective will be measured through a periodic field scan and survey.
