Voting is one of the strongest tools citizens have in our democracy. Yet, in Philadelphia, we often see voter turnout at just over 20% in primary elections, significantly less than the 60% voter turnout we see in Philadelphia for higher profile elections such as for President.
Last summer, the Foundation announced a new objective focused on increasing voter participation, and the upcoming primary elections on May 20th present an important opportunity for citizens to participate in this democratic process.
Which positions will you see on your upcoming primary ballot?
- City Controller
- District Attorney
- Court of Common Pleas
- Philadelphia Municipal Court
- Three ballot questions to amend Philadelphia’s Home Rule Charter
Why are these positions so important?
In Philadelphia, the City Controller is an independent elected position focused on holding city government accountable. The District Attorney is responsible for representing the City of Philadelphia in criminal and other prosecutions, and the judges up for election will oversee various civil and criminal court cases. There will also be three ballot questions to amend Philadelphia’s Home Rule Charter.
The importance of these elected positions can’t be overstated. The Foundation is proud to announce our recent grantees focused on increasing voter participation. These organizations will be working to ensure more Philadelphians and Pennsylvanians know how and where to vote, and most importantly, why their vote matters in every election.
How can you help?
Vote! And remind your friends and family to vote, too. The primary elections are on Tuesday, May 20th, and polls are open from 7am-8pm on election day.
